Morrissey: Greatest Hits

Morrissey

Stephen Patrick Morrissey's status as the elder statesman of English eccentricity and gloom is underlined by the recent release of his Greatest Hits (Polydor/Decca). Accompanied by a new single, That's How People Grow Up, the album features highlights from Morrissey's solo career, from Viva Hate through to Ringleader Of The Tormentors. We have a selection of his best videos plus the new single for you to watch.

- Watch That's How People Grow Up

Despite The Smiths' universally acknowledged place in music's hall of fame, since the disbanding in 1987 of that magical Morrissey/Marr partnership, Morrissey's solo career has suffered a more checkered existence, with a waxing and waning of popularity (particularly in his home country) due to long periods in relative exile (L.A. to be precise) and regular sensational clashes with the NME amidst accusations of racism.

Morrissey's solo albums have nonetheless produced some real gems and great singles, and his most recent work, You Are The Quarry and Ringleader Of The Tormentors marked an assured return to the form of his early solo outings. Apart from his Greatest Hits, you can look forward to a new release of solo material in Autumn 2008.

From his Greatest Hits album, watch Suedehead and Everyday Is Like Sunday which were the first two singles from Morrissey's first solo album, Viva Hate. The Last Of The Famous International Playboys is from Bona Drag. The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get is from 1994's Vauxhall And I, and the new single is called That's How People Grow Up.
