In 2005, the world was awash with good looking and great sounding urban dance divas, however Rihanna cut through the crowd with the mega hit Pon De Replay and hasn't looked back since.
A chance encounter on her home island of Barbados with producer Evan Rogers was what took Rihanna from a teenager in the sand to number two in the US Billboard charts. Rogers' peerless pop pedigree, including Nsync, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson and Jessica Simpson, meant he knew a good thing when he saw it and having created some demos, Jay-Z got the vibe also and signed her up on the spot.
Rihanna's first single from her first album Music Of The Sun was Pon De Replay. The rhythms and beats of the Caribbean proved an instant smash with music fans on both sides of the Atlantic. If It Is Lovin That You Want, also from that album, was as catchy as catchy can be and helped propel that album into many homes.
Not hanging around, she was back in the studio to record what would become A Girl Like Me. Slightly more urban sounding than Music Of The Sun, it includes the classic club track SOS as well as film noir-themed Unfaithful and the cruising We Ride. Check out Rihanna's session for AOL Music in 2006 with exclusive performances of tracks from both of her albums up to that point.
With Umbrella hitting number one in the UK, music fans are now primed for her second single from the album Good Girl Gone Bad - Shut Up And Drive.
