Neil Young - 14, 15 February
Paris Grand Rex
When it comes to living legends of music they don’t come much bigger or better than Neil Young. ‘Shakey’ to his fans, he is now into his fifth decade of making music and over the last few years a string of critically acclaimed releases have proved his talent is alive and well.
Aside from a series of unsuccessful experimental albums in the 1980s Young’s releases generally fall into two camps, the folky and the noisy. Of the former the classic Harvest, and more recently Prairie Wind and Silver and Gold showcase his acoustic plaintive side. Fragile, yet warm his unique, emotive vocals and exceptional song writing shine through.
On the flipside he can’t resist strapping on his vintage Gibson Les Paul – dubbed Old Black – cranking up the volume and letting rip with some heavy rock ‘n’ roll. In the 1990s he employed Pearl Jam as his backing band and enjoyed a commercial and critical renaissance in the process.
His current tour is the first to be undertaken since he suffered a potentially lethal aneurysm in 2005 and by all accounts it has given him new lease of life. Promoting his latest release Chrome Dreams II he will be accompanied on these shows by legendary musicians Ralph Molina and Ben Keith. Think hard this could be your last chance.
USA
Foo Fighters - 19 February
Madison Square Gardens, NYC
It’s been quite a slog for the Foo Fighters but now Dave Grohl and co. can be considered genuine stadium rockers.
Since they formed from the ashes of a host of bands, not least the legendary Nirvana, in 1995 they’ve had hits aplenty; line up changes galore and pretty much toured constantly.
They’ve outlived all manner of fads and fashions and managed to become a mainstay of the heavy rock circuit and with their summer tour finally make the step up from arenas to stadiums.
Promoting the massive Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace album the band’s enthusiasm for the road is there for all to see as they give 100% every show they play.
Expect plenty of classics, thousands of frantic fans singing along in unison in what can now be considered a relatively intimate setting for the band. Get your tickets now before you need binoculars to see them on stage.
Germany
Stereophonics - 23 February
Fritz Club, Berlin
If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket to see the Stereophonics in the UK, you’re likely to be sharing the experience with several thousand others in an arena.
They’ve come a long way since the embarking on their early UK tours visiting more meagre clubs and universities.
As word spread their meteoric rise to fame began and they’ve been regularly headlining festivals and selling out the country’s larger venues ever since.
This date is a chance to see them go back to their roots in a venue holding no more than 500 people.
t’s likely to get sweaty and rocking in this small club as the band thunder through a set combining their classics and newer material from the Pull the Pin album.
You’ll need to be quick, when word gets around about this one you could well find yourself locked out.
Holland
Queens of the Stone Age- 28 February
Heineken Musc Hall, Amsterdam
Formed from the ashes of seminal stoner rock band Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age have established themselves as the most potent rock band on the planet.
An ever-changing line-up fronted by 6’ 5’’ colossus Josh Homme, frequently dubbed the ginger Elvis thanks to his quiff, the Queens mix their heavy robotic riffage with any style they fancy throwing into the mix.
This loose methodology and freshness has thrown up a thrilling list of albums, consistent in their quality and absolutely essential listening.
Their penchant for playing with tried and tested genres, and dismissing the need to stay in a comfortable pigeonhole has confused some yet also amassed a growing number of converts.
Their UK shows sell out in minutes thanks to their reputation as an awesome, exhilarating live experience. The message is simple, get a ticket and get with the Queens.
