Daughtry
American rockers Daughtry are born of namesake Chris Daughtry, a superstar created by the ultimate TV talent contest, American Idol. Coming fourth in season 5 may sound unimpressive, but Chris Daughtry has gone on to unprecedented and bigger success than all his fellow contestants, including the winner.
While the other singers on American Idol 5 performed the same old sugary-sweet ballads, Chris Daughtry stuck to his guns, choosing to demonstrate his powerful voice with a series of real rock performances which led him to become a household name in the States while the show was still running. His cover of Fuel's Haemorrhage (In My Hands) led to them asking him to be their new frontman, but Chris wanted to have his own band. "As a songwriter I felt that I had a lot to say. I didn't want to be limited to someone else's successes. This was my shot to go out and do my own thing." Daughtry was formed by Chris's new record company, RCA's 19 Entertainment (home of other American Idol winners, including Kelly Clarkson).
Not purely a solo project, Daughtry is a team effort now, all decisions being made democratically. The band is made up of guitarists Josh Steely and Jeremy Brady, bassist Josh Paul and drummer Joey Barnes. Their self-titled album was written while Chris was still on the American Idol tour and produced by rock stalwart Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Sepultura).
The CD went on to enter the Billboard charts at no.3 and sell 500,000 copies in 2 weeks, reaching number 1 for two weeks non-consecutively and selling over 3 million copies in total.
Performing four tracks, the huge single It's Not Over, Home, There And Back Again and Used To, Daughtry proved themselves to be a tight unit with a strong bond, primed for the huge success that will continue to come their way.
