Editors
Editors are on a high after their second album, An End Has A Start, which was released in June 2007, went to number 1 in the UK. Add this to the resounding success of their first record, The Back Room, and Tom Smith, Chris Urbanowicz, Rusell Leetch and Ed Lay are poised for greater things. We recorded a live semi-acoustic session with Editors in the US, performing tracks from An End Has A Start, including their rousing new single, The Racing Rats.
With The Back Room going platinum in several countries, Editors' new release An End Has A Start is a more complex affair, yet still touched with the enigmatic, epic beauty and dark subject matter characteristic of the first album.
Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors, always earmarked as the first single for the new record by the band, reflects the concerns of singer Tom Smith, his growing realisations about the complexities of life and the prevalance of death upon it. He says: "There is a lot of death on the record, that sounds pretty morbid but it's the truth. Death has touched me and my friends in the last year in several ways. Realising everything comes to an end is important and I think we've done our best to make it something glorious and uplifting as well as scary."
The album also reflects the changes and effects upon Editors since they shot to fame, with the influence of frenetic touring, says Tom: "Living in an over-populated but exciting world, the buzz of the city, electricity, neon, lights, skyscrapers, planes, billions of people all run through the lyrics of songs on the record." The third single from An End Has A Start is called The Racing Rats and perfectly encapsulates this mood.
Watch Editors perform The Racing Rats, Bones and Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors plus watch an interview with the band. The Racing Rats is out on 26th November and An End Has A Start is out now. Editors are touring the UK throughout October and around Europe in November 2007.
