Ghosts
Watch six exclusive and intimate performances from Ghosts including an amazing cover of Pussycat Dolls' Don't Cha in this AOL Music Session.
Aiming to take the best that music has to offer over the past 50 years and pack it into one 45-minute album is quite an ambition but that's the task Ghosts set themselves. And with that purpose in mind, they invested their first income as a band to take themselves off to Sweden to write.
"We booked 15 seats on EasyJet, one for each guitar, one for the computer, one for the keyboards, it was a complete nightmare but we got there, in this tiny little cottage 10 kilometres from the nearest bar and we had no car. Anyway we kind of sat there for two weeks and wrote nothing, it was all getting quite depressing, and then they started popping out - we got Stay The Night, Musical Chairs and The World Is Outside all in like two weeks," says singer Simon Pettigrew.
The band run through five of their own songs from their debut album for our session including their latest single The World Is Outside with lush harmonies and striking melody. But it was from the oldest song on their books, Ghosts that they took their name. It's a song that they've kept close to their hearts: "We used to be called Polanski, but that turned out not to be such a good idea and anyway no one wanted to sign us. But, you know, even through the dark, depressing times when no one cared about us we've always had that song, I think it's going to be a single," says Simon.
First single Stay The Night did admirably well in the UK charts, cracking the top 30, mainly through downloads and word of mouth, though it was pressed on very loud purple vinyl for 500 physical copies. It produced some memorable moments for the band such as stepping out of rehearsals to hear it playing on the radio in the local cafe and again hearing it being introduced by Terry Wogan as they got into a cab one morning.
For their AOL Music Session cover song , Ghosts were struggling until a pub's jukebox gave them the answer - Pussycat Dolls' Don't Cha! It's not an exact copy by any means, they couldn't resist a bit of rewrite. Simon says: " I just thought let's pick the most obtuse song that no one would expect us to do and try and make it better, because there's no chord changes in it there are only two chords in it the whole way through so we've actually re-written it."
So, check out Ghosts in this live and exclusive session and if you want to see them live, they'll be at many of the major festivals between now and then end of August. Visit their MySpace for more details.
