Unklejam
Unklejam inject so much energy into their show that it's impossible to stand still when they're playing live. Watch these five exclusive live performances recorded in London earlier in May with songs from their debut album.
"Whether it's in front of 10,000 or two people, we come out, we do our thing, we do one song, let them get their vibes going and then flip to the next song," says Adonistar from the band. And Unklejam were true to their word, they played the same show for us that they would for a big crowd but in the more exclusive surroundings of an AOL Music Session.
Those lucky 120 people or so were given the full Unklejam effect as they ran through songs from their self-titled debut album. The band came together through mutual musical attraction through a crowd of fellow musicians, members flipped through various permutations but with the current line-up it all clicked into place.
"They've got to have the same sort of soul that we have, they have to kind of buy into what we're about you know as Unklejam because if you just had a band of session musicians that just came and played, it wouldn't work for us. We're creating music on stage live for everyone to see so you know they have to be as much on the same planet as we are, which is not on this planet, believe me," says Bobby.
It's not all up and shaking for Unklejam, they do step down the pace and mellow out, especially on Cry, Bobby says: "It's one of my favourites on the album. Tyson sings lead and I like it is because at the end of the track the vocals just crescendo in such a way where literally people can feel our soul. The vocals just rip towards the end and it's a beautiful song even though it's about crying."
We always ask bands to perform a cover as part of their session performances and Unklejam picked a beauty in the shape of Bobby Womack's Stop On By. Their treatment of the song showed great respect for the legendary songwriter and hopefully might turn a few folks onto his music. Tyson says: "Young children most probably won't know this song because it's old and done by a man called Bobby Womack, which you may have heard of or not know about, so go online and check him out, he's old, he's dry and he's great."
With that, the talking is done, the photos are done and it's down to business but just before stepping onto stage Adonistar sums up Unklejam for us: "Live is what we're all about man. If it wasn't for the fact that everyone can't be at a show every day and you have to buy a CD in order to experience it, if it wasn't for that it would always be live. Live is where we live."
If you're wonderig where new single What Am I Fighting For is in the session, sadly Tyson's throat gave out but you can still buy the single which is out now, use the links below.
